Located along the upper east shore of Bali, Tulamben is a small hamlet where the beaches are of dark sand and covered with smooth pebbles. Only 30 meters from the shoreline is the broken-up wreck of a massive World War II freighter. Extending 120 meters up a steep sandy base, the highest point of the wreck is a mere 3 meters below the surface. The deepest part of the ship is at 29 meters. On January eleventh, 1942, the freighter, loaded with rubber and railroad parts, was hit by torpedoes fired from the Japanese submarine I166 as she tried to cross the Lombok Strait. Two destroyers rushed to help the badly damaged cargo ship and tried to tow her to port at Singaraja. But the freighter was taking on too much water and had to be run aground at Tulamben. Scubatravel in the UK rates this the third best wreck dive and one of the world's best dives ever. www.scubatravel.co.uk/best-wreck-dives.ht
